An electrical compliance checklist for facilities managers

A simple electrical compliance checklist for facilities managers: EICRs, PAT testing, emergency lighting and records.

An electrical compliance checklist for facilities managers

Quick answer: Keep an in-date EICR, act on any remedials, keep PAT testing and emergency lighting tests up to date, and store every certificate and record in one place.

The essentials

  • EICR: is it in date, and do you know when the next one is due?
  • Remedials: have any C1, C2 or FI items from the last report been fixed and certified?
  • PAT testing: is portable equipment tested at sensible intervals with a current register?
  • Emergency lighting: are routine function tests and the annual full duration test being carried out and recorded?
  • New work: is there a certificate for every alteration or addition since the last EICR?

Around the electrics

  • Are distribution boards labelled with up to date circuit charts?
  • Are electrical cupboards kept clear and locked where needed?
  • Has fire stopping been checked where new cables pass through walls and floors?

Keep records in one place

Most compliance headaches come from missing paperwork rather than unsafe electrics. A single folder, digital or paper, holding every report, certificate and test record makes audits and insurance renewals much easier.

Multi-site portfolios

If you look after several buildings, a planned testing programme with one contractor keeps dates aligned and reporting consistent across every site.
