What's included in a commercial electrical installation?

A plain English guide to what a commercial electrical installation covers, from design to testing and certification.

What's included in a commercial electrical installation?

Quick answer: A commercial electrical installation usually covers the survey and design, the distribution boards and sub-mains, containment and cabling, power and lighting, emergency lighting, and full testing and certification at the end.

It starts with a survey

Every good installation starts with understanding the building. That means looking at the existing supply, how the space will be used, where people will sit and what equipment needs power. From there the work can be planned properly, including how it fits around the building's day to day running.

The main parts of the job

  • Distribution: new or upgraded distribution boards, sub-mains and protective devices.
  • Containment: trunking, tray, basket and conduit that carry and protect the cables.
  • Small power: sockets, floor boxes, fused spurs and supplies to kitchens, comms rooms and plant.
  • Lighting: general lighting, controls and emergency lighting.
  • Testing and certification: every circuit tested and an Electrical Installation Certificate issued.

What you should get at the end

When the work is finished you should receive certification for the installation, updated circuit charts at the boards and clear labelling. Keep these safe. They're what insurers, auditors and future contractors will ask for.

Why one contractor helps

Electrics rarely happen on their own. Ceilings go up, partitions move and finishes follow. Using one team for the electrics and the fit-out trades around them cuts down on handovers and keeps the programme tidy.
